Webinar on Enhancing Climate Ambition in Transport

Event Date

Dear climate-friendly transport colleague,

Together with the Partnership for Sustainable Low Carbon Transport (SLoCaT), we would like to invite you to our webinar on Enhancing Climate Ambition in Transport on Wednesday, 22nd April 2020, 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM CET. Please register here.

We will present the findings of our detailed survey of existing transport-related roadmaps, calls for action, and research findings, as well as encourage a discussion concerning our conclusions between all participants. In addition, SLoCaT will tell us about a database they are putting together with GIZ and others in order to assess transport in the revised NDCs as well as introduce us to their communication campaign around the NDCs.

Feel free to take a look at the publication itself: Enhancing Climate Ambition in Transport. And for an overview of the findings, please see the graphic illustrations in English and Spanish as well as the postcards.

Time to Act

187 countries signed the Paris Agreement and committed themselves to robust climate action. In 2020, they are expected to submit revised national climate targets – known as Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). These plans are an opportunity to ramp up commitments and create strategies that are ambitious enough to avert dangerous climate change. Particularly the transport sector remains a key source of concern. Vehicle emissions continue to rise in most countries and many officials still struggle to find the information that is needed to translate their plans into concrete measures. Without swift, ambitious action to reengineer the transport sector, it will be impossible to meet the 2°C objective.

Against this backdrop, the TraCS Project has synthesized key documents on enhancing ambition in the transport sector into the paper Enhancing Climate Ambition in Transport. Aiming to support policymakers in better understanding options for additional climate action, it distils this vast amount of information into six clear, essential recommendations:

  1. Shifting the mobility paradigm towards zero-carbon targets for 2050
  2. Ensuring the resilience of transport systems
  3. Empowering cities with national support
  4. Investing in sustainable rail, waterways and multimodal hubs
  5. Enhancing system efficiency in freight and logistics
  6. Accelerating electrification with renewable energy
